Faster, harder-edged and more driver-orientated than its R107 predecessor, the Mercedes-Benz R129-series SL was launched at the 1989 Geneva Motor Show. Brimful of cutting-edge technology, its impressively rigid two-door monocoque shell featured an integral roll over bar that deployed in less than a third of a second (if the car ever sensed an impending flip) and a fully automatic convertible roof. Known for its sure-footed handling, the R129 utilised all-round independent suspension, ABS brakes and power assisted steering. Propelled by a variety of six- and eight-cylinder engines all allied to automatic transmission, it was the sportscar of choice for many contemporary F1 drivers. Introduced in 1993, the SL 320 was powered by a 3199cc straight-six engine that developed some 228bhp and 232lbft of torque. Reputedly capable of 0-60mph in 8.4 seconds and 149mph, the model was mildly facelifted during 1995 gaining new softer-styled headlights, side air bags, automatic climate control and Mercedes' much vaunted ESP (Electronic Stability Program) software.
Finished in Tanzanite Blue with Light Mushroom leather upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "good" condition with regard to its engine, five-speed automatic transmission, electrical equipment, interior trim, bodywork and paintwork. Entering the current (second) ownership via Fast Lane Motorcars Ltd of Stoke on Trent in October 2001 for the princely sum of £25,000, the SL 320 is stated to have covered some 121,000 miles from new. Boasting an impressive specification that includes "ASR, ESP, automatic climate control, heated memory seats, front / side airbags, cruise control, hard-top, dark blue soft-top, draught excluder, Kenwood 6 CD stacker / cassette / radio and Tracker device", the sportscar is further understood to benefit from "a full service history". Fitted with a new electric hood control unit during 2005, the car is generally felt to be in good working order except for its air conditioning system which is thought to need re-gassing. Riding on alloy wheels, this smart Mercedes-Benz SL 320 is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until April 2010 and current road tax.
