  • H&H anniversary auction nets sales of more than £3.5 million
  • Number of stunning classics sell for well above their pre-sale estimates
  • 1960 Facel Vega HK500 reunited with grandson of original owner

More than 100 fantastic classic, collectible and performance cars, worth a combined total of over £3.5 million, have been successfully hammered away in H&H Classics’ 30th anniversary sale.

The auction, which took place at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford, on 20 September, saw a number of notable results, including a 1938 Lagonda V12 Le Mans Replica Sports Tourer selling for £225,000 on the day before the auction, £45,000 over its pre-sale estimate. From a similar era, a 1927 Bentley 3/4½-Litre Tourer was successfully sold to a buyer in France for £198,333, more than £18,000 over its lower estimate. Meanwhile, a 1965 Bentley S3 Continental Flying Spur Saloon fetched £129,375, almost £20,000 over its lower estimate.

“We would like to thank everyone who participated in our latest sale, as well as the thousands of owners and enthusiasts who have supported and trusted us over the last 30 years,” comments Colette McKay, managing director, H&H Classics. “The day itself proved to be a fantastic celebration which was well attended, had a huge number of registered bidders and achieved some great results.”

Among the many fascinating stories related to the cars on sale, a stunning 1960 Facel Vega HK500 sold for a terrific £115,875, more than £25,000 over its lower estimate. Not only was the sale an impressive result, but it saw the car reunited with the family of the original owner, Mr Ernest Doe, director of Ernest Doe & Sons in Essex, having been successfully bought by his grandson.

Another car with an interesting history was a 1989 Ferrari 328 GTS, one of just 543 right hand drive examples. A stalled project in need of completion, the car was snapped up for £50,625, more than £12,000 over its lower estimate.

The ongoing appeal of Fast Fords was clearly demonstrated in the sale with a 1975 Ford Escort RS2000 selling for £39,375, more than £14,000 over its lower estimate, while a 1964 Mercedes-Benz 230 SL ‘Pagoda’ was the subject of a fierce three-way bidding war, eventually selling to a telephone bidder for £70,875, more than £20,000 over its lower estimate.

However, it wasn’t just cars that flew away on the day, with H&H successfully selling a 1/25 share in a 1943 Catalina Flying Boat for £24,750.

“Having focused for a number of months on our record 30th anniversary sale, our attentions will now switch back to two-wheels, with our final classic scooter and motorcycle sale of the year which takes place in November, ahead of our final classic car sale of the year, also in November,” adds McKay. “We’re still accepting entries into both of these sales, so if you have a classic to sell, of either the two or four wheel variety, I’d encourage you to contact our team as soon as possible.”
