Lot 8

1987 Alfa Romeo Sprint 1.5 Green Cloverleaf

Estimated at £3,000 - £4,000

Lot details
Registration No: E866LHX
Chassis No: 5131195
Mot Expiry: May 2008

Lauded for setting new standards of handling and roadholding, amongst numerous other virtues, the Alfasud was a natural to be transformed in Alfa tradition into a stunning coupe. An exquisitely proportioned 3-door coupe bodyshell designed by Pinninfarina clothed the mechanicals of the 1300 Ti saloon and although launched in 1976, delays in production due to strikes that plagued the southern Italian factory, meant that the first right hand drive examples reached the UK in October 1977. Just as delightful as the saloon with a free-revving 1286cc 'boxer' engine, exquisite steering and handling, comfortable ride and surprisingly roomy interior, the Sprint was a predictable hit with the motoring press and despite a price putting it into contention with the larger engined Volkswagen Scirocco, Opel Manta and Toyota Celica sales were brisk. However, with such a wonderful chassis the car cried out for more power to exploit it so a 1.5 model was launched in 1978 followed by the 95 bhp Sprint Veloce in 1979. Still a class leader when production of the saloons ended in 1983, the Sprint (the Alfasud prefix was dropped) continued in production and was facelifted. Available as a 1.3 and new 1.5 Green Cloverleaf with 105bhp version of the 1490cc engine, the Sprint was Alfa Romeo's best selling model in the UK in 1984.

The 1987 Green Cloverleaf for sale here is finished in red with black cloth interior and has covered a warranted mileage of 166,125 from new (the five figure odometer showing 66,125) verified by a "complete service history". We are told by the vendor that this car was treated to a restoration costing approximately £16,000 last year by Benalfa which included "panelwork, engine overhaul, gearbox, clutch, brakes, steering and suspension overhaul". Said to "drive beautifully, just as it should" with "an immaculate original interior" it features upgrades of an alarm/immobiliser, Kenwood stereo and sunroof. Described by the vendor as "excellent" with regard to engine, electrics, paintwork, bodywork, transmission and interior and with "good" tyres, this 4 owner car is MOT'd until May 2008 and taxed until August 2007. Good Alfasuds of any kind are now very rare and highly prized making this Sprint worthy of closer inspection.
