Mercedes brought out their first unitary-construction 220 in 1953, the second generation model, with wider track and roomier bodies incorporating small fins, taking the export markets by storm from 1959.
It is claimed that the 1964-built 220SB with 89,883 miles on the odometer, which was imported from the mainly dry South African climate in 1976, has been repainted recently, and that both body and white paintwork are good. Both 2.2-litre 6-cylinder engine and 4-speed automatic transmission are reportedly in good order too.
The London owner tells us that he is only parting with his Merc, which has been rarely used, through lack of storage space. Right-hand drive Mercs of this age and type have become rare, and those with sound undersides even rarer! Apart from being fully capable of being driven on a daily driver basis, fintails have earned a deserved reputation among the historic rallying fraternity for being able to complete the toughest marathon event routes. This could be your wheels for London to Sydney, Mexico, the Great Wall of China or wherever...
