Alvis launched the elegant TD21 in 1958, fitted with an uprated version of the three litre engine launched with the TA21. The styling was heavily influenced by the Graber Coupes built in Switzerland on the TC21 chassis, but the body construction was undertaken by Park Ward, better known for their bodies on Rolls-Royce and Bentley cars.
The model was available as a two door saloon or convertible and both were fitted with sumptuous interiors in full leather with exquisite wood veneers for the instrument panel and door cappings. It was fitted with Lockheed servo assisted brakes, with discs at the front, and could be fitted with manual or automatic transmission. The car had plenty of leg and headroom in the back for adults, and a large boot, making it a very practical proposition for families and serious continental touring. When new it was an expensive car, and regarded as in the same league as Rolls Royce, Bentley or Bristol, but with a more sporting edge reflecting Alvis's heritage. Alvis Cars still exists today, and the availability of spares is excellent.
This example is one of the rare TD21 drophead coupes, of which only 191 were produced, and is fitted with automatic transmission and wire wheels. Finished in striking and rare primrose yellow, it has recently been re-trimmed in black leather. The vendor advises that "much money has been spent over the past year keeping the car in first class mechanical order". In a previous owner's hands for 40 years, the current owner describes it simply as a "lovely genuine and original" example of "arguably one of the most desirable post-war British convertibles".
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
