Introduced in 1968, the T2 generation of Volkswagen’s iconic, forward-control Type 2, which has proven versatile enough to serve as a panel van, minibus, camper van, and even fire engine, was immediately recognisable due to its adoption of a large single-piece windscreen. Popularly nicknamed the 'Bay Window', the newcomer (colloquially known as an ‘early bay’) incorporated a revised half-shaft driveline to the rear, not only facilitating an increase in ride height but also improving handling. The T2's lengthened wheelbase was welcomed by motor caravan builders because the increased interior space made conversion and customization easier. Facelifted in 1972 for the following model year (and known colloquially as the ‘late bay’), the Volkswagen gained more visible/higher-set indicators and stronger square-profile bumpers that enabled the so-called T2b to meet contemporary US passenger car safety standards, from which vans were technically exempt.
Manufactured in 1975, 'JTH 107N' was provided with a Jurgens Caravan Company conversion to Autovilla specification, 1 of around 1,000 produced. Fitted from the factory with the 1800c flat-four air-cooled dual carburettor engine allied to the four-speed manual transmission, and is finished in Khaki Green and White paintwork. Featuring a Jurgens crockery set, South African kitchen table map, sink, outer tent, and original mirrors, the Autovilla is a highly original example and has 96,000 kilometres recorded on the odometer. Imported from South Africa earlier this year, and therefore a highly original and corrosion-free example and is now United Kingdom registered as 'JTH 107N'. Provided with a full mechanical and electrical check through upon arrival in the United Kingdom, the vendor rates the bodywork, paintwork, engine, and gearbox as 'very good', and the electrical equipment and interior upholstery as 'good.
