Lot 58

1937 Rolls-Royce Phantom III Limousine

Sold for £18,000

(including buyers premium)

Lot details
Registration No: WAS 742
Chassis No: 3BT107
Mot Expiry: Exempt

The first owner of this delightful, righthand drive, long-wheelbase Hooper-bodied Limousine was a lady in Sussex. Post war, it appears to have been stored unlicensed until purchased from Cockshoots by the University of Manchester in April 1951; at which time the mileage stood at 12,640. Records show that the registration was changed to 'ONE 1' in December 1953 and, thanks to sharing duties with another car, the Rolls' mileage had only risen to 60,764 by December 1963. It was then dry stored once more - this time for 40 years, and it was in 'as found' condition that it was presented for sale at our February 2004 auction at Stoneleigh Park. And it was there that the current vendor acquired the vehicle, following which he lovingly restored it in memory of his late father - the person that nurtured his lifelong interest such early cars. He feels fate had a hand in the purchase, as not only did his first bid clinch the sale but, after buying the car, he discovered the registration (which had changed once more) was WAS 724 - by amazing coincidence, the initials of his late father.
The restoration work was carried out between 2004 and 2006 and included a repaint in Black over White by Brookfields of Hinkley. The impressive-looking interior was retrimmed with Blue leather and carpet for the driver's compartment, and Red cloth for the rear - the ornate headlining is a sight to behold. The brightwork was refurbished and the Rolls inspected by the Phantom III technical Society, who agreed that the V12 engine and four-speed manual gearbox needed no more than servicing, despite 40 years of disuse. Bearing in mind the above history, there is every reason to assume the indicated mileage of 67,745 is correct. This interesting and desirable Phantom now seeks a new keeper.
