Lot details Registration No: MDG 475 Chassis No: 411 Mot Expiry: May 2004
Only three months after launch at the 1951 New York Show, the Jowett Jupiter was successful at Le Mans in the epic 24 Hours race. Some 900 were built in Bradford from 1951 to 1953, with only 50 reckoned to be on the road today. This one is certainly being one of the very best examples of these survivors.
The 1953-made 2-seater sports-car has a water-cooled flat-4 with horizontally opposed alloy cylinders, a strong tubular chassis supporting an aluminium 2-seater body and column-mounted 4-speed gearchange. It was last restored in 1998 by Michael Kavanagh of Keighley, Yorkshire, renowned for achieving many concours award winning Jowetts. The engine was completely refurbished in March 2001 by Kieron Patterson, the Burton Upon Trent specialist responsible for rebuilding several Jowett motors, this one having oil cooler and additional electric fan. The rebuild was featured in the Jowetteer, the JCC magazine, the car having since only completed 4000 trouble-free miles. The dash is in teak and the interior is leather, the bench-type front seat folding down to reveal significant boot space. The vendor claims that trim and hood, which folds down and away beneath a cover, have been renewed employing the same materials used fifty years ago and matching the original colours. The overall condition is described as excellent.
The car has been used on Club outings, tours and holidays, but no competitions. An autographed copy of 'The Car that Leaped to Fame', describing Jupiter race and rally history, is included.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
