Piper Cars was was a producer of specialist sports cars initially based in Hayes with production taking place from 1968 in Wokingham, Berkshire and then from 1973 at South Willingham, Lincolnshire. In the late 1960s a mid-engined Group 6 racing car, the GTR, was being developed with the help of Kingston University London, but only four were produced before the project was abandoned due to the death of company owner Brian Sherwood in late 1969. The GTR was only 30 inches high, and had a drag co-efficient of only 0.28 achieved in part by moving the water and oil radiators to the rear of the car. The car was entered for the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1969 but overheating problems and the failure of driver John Burton to record a qualifying time meant that it did not start the race.
In 2006 Piper Racing Cars Ltd provided Kingston University with the necessary computerised information to carry out tests on aerodynamics, radiators, fuel tanks, and engine location in a new space frame chassis. In 2008 the new gullwing coupe GTR "EVO" was completed with new chassis, suspension, rear uprights, 40 litre foam filled fuel tank, 1600 cc Ford Zetec/Sigma engine and five speed gear box to use as a track day/race car. Tests confirmed it offered a considerable aerodynamic improvement over the original car and weighed in at only 620 Kilos. A 50 mile shake-down run was then satisfactorily completed on Bradwell on sea Airfield, this being the total mileage covered by the car to date. The build costs are said to be a little over £50,000 and the vendor informs us the car could be used as a track day car or with suitable modifications could become a unique road car.
