Documents with this machine indicate the 350cc Gold Star scrambler, which was originally made in the BSA Small Heath factory in 1955, was ridden in 1950s motocross events by works rider Andy Lee.
Two competition Gold Stars were built; a 500 for Brian Stonebridge, later to become the Greeves works rider, and a 350 for Lee, who, apart from riding for BSA, also rode factory machines on the Continent for King and Harpers. After Lee opened his own dealership in Ely, the 500 and 350 works bikes were sold; Fred Mayes and then Roger Dutton owning the 500, and John Allen buying the 350, which stayed in his ownership until September 2002 when acquired by the vendor.
This ex-works 350 remains substantially original with the exception of the air cleaner which has been replaced with an Ariel twin washable unit. Period photos show a circa 1957 change to a plain alloy petrol tank, while the 350cc Gold Star single motor is said to run well and the gearbox and electrics all work.
