We are indebted to the vendor for the following description:

“According to the Alfa Romeo Museum archives (email on file), ‘GHK 99B’ was manufactured on October 25th 1963, with optional front disc brakes, and sold to its first owner via Chipstead Motors, Holland Park, London on 21st September 1964. The original service book, which is included in the substantial history file, indicates the Spider was first bought by a Mrs A Poyser of Marks Tey, in Essex followed by a Mr W. D. Partridge of Aldenham, Hertfordshire shortly thereafter.

The service book shows First County Motors of Southall, Middlesex serviced the vehicle on October 22nd 1965 when the speedometer recorded 7,091 miles, presumably just prior to the sale to the second owner. There are several entries in the book indicating regular attention by Round Bush Garage near to Mr Partridge’s home in Hertfordshire. Mr Partridge looked after the car for more than ten years with the mileage recorded in the service book at a modest 27,154 in April 1976.

By 1987, the vehicle became the property of Alfa Romeo enthusiasts Lynne Doyle and Nick Smith who owned a successful restoration business in Essex and who were at the time restoring another classic Alfa Romeo. They apparently retained ownership of ‘GHK 99B’ until March 2005 when she finally passed to Simon Brewer of Fulham, London. Again, the car had much care lavished on it, as evidenced by the numerous bills and receipts in the history portfolio. Alfa Romeo specialists DTR European Sports Cars were entrusted with a lot of the work and in August 2010 they were able to acquire the vehicle.

Whilst in the care of DTR, she underwent a total restoration. Work included a full strip down, respray, rewire, an engine and carburettor overhaul (new pistons, liners, bearings, crankshaft rebalance, cylinder head with new valves and conversion to unleaded). All this work is recorded in an invoice of significant value within the history file.

In March 2011 DTR Sports Cars sold the car to Paul Jarrold in Bridport, Dorset with 85,800 recorded miles which, with evidence from the history file, is believed to be correct. Further maintenance followed, including replacement of the soft top, a new stainless-steel exhaust and a gearbox refresh.

During three-and-a-half years of ownership, 8,700 further miles were covered, including a trip to Northern Italy with a UK based Alfa Romeo club, with no reported problems. ‘GHK 99B’ was also awarded with The Peoples’ Choice Award at the Simply Alfa Romeo gathering at the Beaulieu Motor Museum in June 2013. Mr Jarrold finally decided on a change of Alfa Romeo and, via an owner in between, it was sold to Southwood, a well-respected Alfa Romeo specialist.

I bought the car from Southwood in 2017. During my ownership the gearbox, gear linkage and rear brakes were overhauled. The steering geometry adjusted and the wheels refurbished. The mileage is now 95000. Learning that the Spider had been subject to an insurance payout due to an engine fire before DTR Sports Cars comprehensively restored it during 2010 I had ‘GHK 99B’ examined by Autolign of Northampton with the result that it now appears on the HPi database as Condition Inspected".
