1968 Model built in 1967 TSS imported by Frank Sheene in November 1967
Raced by Barry Sheene and Dave Croxford in the 1968 season
Frank Sheene sold the bike 1969/1970
Purchased and raced in the 1970s by the late Brian Richards (BRD Racing)
Our vendor purchased the bike from Brian Richards in 1985 in pretty much standard factory condition
Our vendor changed the carb to a Del Orto.
Frank Sheene saw the bike in the early 1990s at Scarborough and confirmed that the bike was his bike.
Tony Dawson of Scitsu gave our vendor the following information "This was one of a chain drive 'production' batch made in 1967. The first gear drive 'production' model engine was made as M600705. There could be two reasons yours is a gear drive, 1 - it was taken out of the production line to be made/converted to gear drive especially for Frank/Barry, 2 - Frank may have got all the bits to convert it himself back in England. Several people did this conversion as all of the castings had the facility for gear drive in 1967 whilst still being produced as a chain drive. I think there was some delay on gear drive parts for the 1967 production but that is not confirmed. This bike was certainly a production model not a prototype, according to my records. Remember Barry was only a novice (albeit a very talented one) at that time, it was Frank who had the influence at the time with Snr Bultaco"
Maintained throughout its ownership with our vendor and is described as in running order
Our vendor has changed the first gear ratio for a lower gear to make starting easier. Previous owner Brian Richards had said, "It's easy to start as long as you can run at 40mph!"
The gearbox main shaft has been replaced with a shaft that is splined at the clutch end
In mostly unrestored condition with the original paint on the frame
The bike was featured in 2014 on the BBC "Racing Legends" documentary with Vic Reeves riding the bike
The bike is fitted with a Selletra ignition system.
A spare engine (pictured) with number 600660 is available to the buyer by separate negotiation
The bike is currently on display at the Silverstone Experience at Silverstone Circuit, viewings are available with prior arrangement
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
