1965 Hillman Imp Works Rally Car

Estimated at £40,000 - £50,000

Lot details
Registration No: FRW306C
Chassis No: B412002449HS0T
Mot Expiry: July 2013

Quite possibly the most original Works Rally Car that we have had the pleasure of offering, 'FRW 306C' is understood to retain the same bodyshell and drivetrain with which it contested the 1966 Scottish Rally. Reportedly disowned by the Rootes' Competition Department after retiring from that event due to mechanical failure, the diminutive saloon was recovered to a famer's barn where it remained until a few years ago. Still covered in straw when discovered by the vendor, 'FRW 306C' was treated to an extensive six/seven-month restoration shortly thereafter. Boasting such niceties as a reinforced monocoque, uprated suspension, additional front-mounted radiator and rolled wheelarches, the ex-Works machine was subsequently identified as the one with which Rosemary Smith / Val Dolmeo had won the 'Coupe des Dames' on the 1966 Monte Carlo Rally (before falling foul of the same lighting irregularity that saw the Works Minis infamously lose their 1st, 2nd and 3rd places). Upgraded from Group 1 875cc (Monte) to Group 3 998cc (Scottish) specification by the Works, the Imp had its engine prepared by Andy Chessman of VW Derrington fame in period. Featuring a strengthened block, gasket-less head, R21 camshaft and twin Weber 40DCOE carburettors, the four-cylinder unit was refreshed circa 150 miles ago and is allied to a correct-type Works RR gearbox with lifted first gear (a necessity for twisting hairpins). Winner of 'Best in Show' at the Hillman Imp National Meeting where Rosemary Smith signed its front wings and headlining, 'FRW 306C' has naturally been invited to participate in the model's 50th Anniversary Celebrations this year. Riding on genuine Minilite alloy wheels, this historic and highly original Works Rally Car is accompanied by a Halda Speedpilot, Bradex fire extinguisher, Elopress tyre inflator, history file and Corgi model of itself.
PLEASE NOTE: This vehicle has an MOT and Tax until July 2013.
