If you want to select a model that defined a whole genre of road cars for decades to come, look no further than the Golf GTi. Other hot hatches have worn the GTi badge, some have challenged for the crown without such a moniker. None have made such an impact at birth or stood the test of time so well.
This GTi is a right-hand drive MKI example from 1982, powered by the rev happy 115bhp 1588cc engine and finished in Mars Red with a Red/Black cloth interior. It is being sold by the UK's largest classic car hire company, who purchased it in 2009 as an unfinished project. They completed the extensive restoration that totalled over £7,000. The engine was refurbished by a leading VW specialist using the original matching numbers block, the underside of the shell welded as required, the body completely resprayed, the wiring replaced, the alloy wheels refurbished and a service carried out less than 100 miles ago. According to the vendor, "a weekend's work on the interior would bring 'PMG 462X' close to concours condition". It is being sold with extensive history file including service and parts bills, most of the old MOTs and one valid into May 2013. A rare opportunity.
PLEASE NOTE: The vendor advises the car has covered c.100,000 miles but is fitted with a replacement instrument bezel showing c.90,000 miles.
PLEASE NOTE: The vendor has informed us that a new clutch has been fitted to this vehicle.
