Norton was founded by James Lansdowne Norton in Birmingham in 1898 and began building motorcycles with French and Swiss engines in 1902. In 1907 a Norton with a Peugeot engine won the first Isle of Man TT race starting a long tradition of sporting excellence. Developed for their Manx Norton race bikes, the legendary Featherbed frame eventually made its way onto the road in 1953 housing the 500cc twin cylinder engine in the Dominator 88. Further development increased the engine size and the introduction of the 650SS in 1962 formed the ultimate expression of the Dominator range and when coupled with Nortons Roadholder forks became the ultimate 'Cafe Racer' in the 1960s. The SS is a very rare bike nowadays as so many have been stripped down to become donor bikes for various Featherbed framed specials.
This stunning Dommie has been restored over the last couple of years to a very high standard keeping a good degree of originality. The paintwork and chromework has been refinished and the speedo refurbished with new parts fitted including the seat, exhaust system, wiring harness, Mosfet regulator, chain and sprockets, swinging arm bushes and rear shocks. The engine and gearbox rebuild was entrusted to Norvil including a belt drive conversion, Boyer ignition and new carbs. A matching numbers bike supplied with a current V5C.
