The larger saloons from Mercedes-Benz were built with a new W116-type bodyshell 1972-1980, engine options being 6-cylinder 280 and V8 350 or 450. The SEL versions had an extra 4ins wheelbase, and while the 280 offered a choice of manual or automatic transmission, the larger Mercs were only autos. These superbly-crafted vehicles offered a serious challenge to Rolls-Royce for the 'Best Car in the World' accolade. Whilst for those wanting ultimate performance, there was the 143mph 450SEL 6.9 with 600 motor enlarged to 6834cc in the 450SEL bodyshell, though with hydropneumatic suspension from the 600.
Acquired by the Dublin vendor from one of our auctions in 2001 and consigned directly by him to us today, the ex-Stewart Imber Collection M-B 450SEL - a 6.9-litre powered saloon with right-hand drive which was manufactured in Germany in 1979 - has been dry garaged and expertly maintained since acquisition. Prior to this, the Stuttgart Express had only been lightly restored with the greatest attention being taken to retain as much originality as possible.
Currently, the luxurious and capacious bodywork, as well as the paintwork in gunmetal grey metallic and black leather trimmed interior, are all reportedly in excellent condition. The 6834cc 8-cylinder engine and 4-speed automatic transmission are also said to be in excellent order. Whilst the 71,000 miles displayed when entered is believed to be the genuine total mileage.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
