Intended primarily for sidecar work, AJS introduced its first V-Twin powered motorcycle in 1912. A robust sidevalve design, it was commandeered by the military for a wide variety of roles during World War I (including usage as a highly effective mobile machine gun platform). Civilianised again following the cessation of hostilities, its blend of sufficient speed with excellent flexibility saw it attract buyers throughout the 1920s.
Part of a private museum collection, this particular combination would appear to be based on one of the more popular 800cc models (however, this supposition has not been confirmed). Finished in the traditional 'Ajay' livery of black with gold pinstriping, it sports generously valanced mudguards, klaxon horn, pillion seat, saddlebags and a nickel-rimmed lighting set. A single-seater, the attendant chair wears a ramped windscreen and rear-mounted spare wheel. Seemingly last on the road in 1994 (or so its fork-mounted tax disc would imply), the combination has been in dry storage for some time and will therefore require recommissioning prior to usage. Sold strictly as seen, it is offered without paperwork (though, our own records show that its 'PU' registration number may originally have been issued in Essex).
