To counter the Austin-Healey Sprite budget sports from their then arch rivals BMC, Triumph rushed out the Spitfire, which was an open 2-seater version of the Herald saloon, employing the same 1147cc engine, chassis and swing-axle rear suspension. Styled by Michelotti, Spitfire Mks I to V were made 1962 to 1980. Pitched against the MGB GT, a 1998cc 6-cylinder Vitesse engined Spitfire with fixed head fastback coupe body, the GT6 MkI, was offered 1966-1968. The 1968-1970 GT6 MkII had improved rear suspension and higher MkIII Spitfire bumpers, whilst the improved 1970-1973 GT6 MkIII with Spitire MkIV styling ended the line. Once considered the ‘poor man’s E-Type Jaguar’, this gutsy Triumph GT is now very much sought after by collectors with values on the rise as a consequence.
The subject of a body-off restoration in 2014 by Triumph specialists JY Classics of Little Kingshill, Buckinghamshire, this wonderful example has had no less than approximately £50,000 lavished upon it which the vendor advises is fully documented. Finished in Pimento Red with black interior, the car benefits from an overdrive gearbox and has been driven just 429 miles since restoration being stored in a carcoon within a garage and now registers some 82,000 miles. As a consequence it is no surprise the vendor currently describes the bodywork, paintwork, engine, gearbox and interior as all being in “excellent” condition. Few GT6s can have enjoyed such levels of care and investment making XEX 869M an extremely unusual and desirable proposition.
