As was the case with so many of the manufacturers that used to make up the once great British motorcycle industry, AJS set up their first workshop in Wolverhampton. Joe Stevens owned his Stevens Screw Company, which was founded in 1897, his four sons, George, Jack, Joe and Harry, built their first AJS motorcycle with a side-valve engine of 298cc capacity of their own design in 1909. The company went on to produce one of the first British overhead-valve engined machines, a 350, and a 500 OHV bike was also offered from 1925. In depressed 1931, however, the Stevens Bros were forced to sell AJS to the Collier Bros, owners of Plumstead-based Matchless, AJS production being moved to the same London manufacturing site. In the following years, the marques shared many components.
This AJS Model 30 had been a ‘barn find’. In ownership since, the engine was stripped and overhauled and is now described by the vendor as ‘running well’. With that recommissioning work, the vendor has been able to use the machine, offering any new owner the benefit of a ride and restore example of a Model 30. Accompanying, is a current V5C and sundry receipts relating to work carried out thus far.
