Towards the end of the 1960's BMW were faced with a dilemma, their existing motorcycle range continued to sell steadily, primarily to those who valued the products long distance abilities and quality, however, the imminent arrival of the first generation of "superbikes" with their sophisticated specification and high performance posed a threat. BMW responded with the introduction of a revised range of machines in 1970. Typed the /5 series and offered in 500, 600 and 750cc capacities they marked a considerable change in approach for the Bavarian concern. The Earles type front forks that had characterized the earlier models were replace by telescopic items and a new pivoted fork frame was employed. The engines were completely redesigned with journal type bearings replacing the roller and ball units fitted in the bottom end. Early models featured chrome tank panels, these being replaced by painted tanks during the models production life. During 1973 BMW announced a revised range of twins in the form of the /6 series. These marked the introduction of a five speed gearbox in place of the four speed units previously employed and the adoption of a disc brake at the front.
This example has recently been imported from the United States and is offered Vat and Duty paid. The machine, which runs, offers a sound basis for restoration.
