A large-format, broad-nib pen and ink sketch, extremely well-detailed, depicting Monsieur Bibendum sitting atop Olympia, making sure all the exhibits for the 1913 motor show are equipped with the best tyres. The level of detail is astounding, with a miniature crane, smoking factories in the background, piles of beaded-edged tyres and much more. We believe the artist to be 'O'Galop', a pseudonym of Marius Rossillon (June 8, 1867 - January 2, 1946); a French artist and cartoonist, best known as the creator of 'Bibendum'. O'Galop began his career around 1893, drawing cartoons for magazines - we believe this to be one of his preliminary sketches for the event advertisement. Good condition, save for foxing and some handling wear. An important piece of early Michelin ephemera. Unrepeatable.
