A significant step in terms of 'Big Healey' evolution and foundation block for one of the 1960s' most charismatic rally cars, the 3000 MKI was introduced in March 1959. Powered by an enlarged 2912cc version of BMC's C-Series straight-six engine that developed some 124bhp and 167lbft of torque, it could be had in two-seater (BN7) or 2+2 seater (BT7) configurations. Progressively improved, the 3000 metamorphosed through MKII and MKIIa guises before the arrival of the ultimate MKIII BJ8 in October 1963. Boasting a centre console, proper convertible hood, wood veneer dashboard, redesigned exhaust system and wind-up windows, the 2+2 seater BJ8 proved a comfortable and fast grand tourer. With engine output boosted to 148bhp and 165lbft of torque thanks to a new camshaft and better valve springs etc, its reputed 124mph top speed was accessed via a four-speed manual gearbox. Last of the line, the Phase Two variant benefited from redesigned rear suspension, strengthened splined hubs and larger diameter front disc brakes.
According to its accompanying British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate, this particular right-hand drive 'home market' example was originally finished in Healey Blue with Blue hide upholstery. Entrusted to Yorkshire Restorations in 2004, 'MKC 967F' underwent an extensive mechanical overhaul that saw it fitted with numerous Denis Welch-supplied parts. As well as having its engine "thoroughly reconditioned" to "Stage 2 fast road" specification and its gearbox "refurbished by a specialist", the 3000 had its front and rear suspension rejuvenated not to mention being treated to uprated brakes, Koni dampers and an anti roll bar plus replacement wheel bearings to its rear axle. Furthermore, all fuel lines and brake lines were replaced.
Treated to a new rear bumper and respray in Ice Blue over Old English White by Mike Lambert during 2007, the Big Healey was dispatched to Ian Myers earlier this year for renovations to its driver's door and front wings plus a thorough undersealing. While the past few months have seen the 3000 visit the workshops of renowned Austin-Healey specialist Orchard Restorations where it has benefited from nearly £5,000 worth of improvements including: new hood, new carpets, a light refurbishment of the seemingly original Blue leather seats, a new windscreen seal, new door seals, new exhaust system and manifolds, brake system overhaul, detailing of the engine compartment, a full wiring check, new door top trim, new exhaust installed, footwell panels and door rubbers.
This appealing Big Healey is offered for sale with history file (detailing much of the work carried out since 1999) and current MOT certificate valid until September 2013.
