Lot details
Registration No: 527 KUP
Frame No: 27408
Engine No: 592A490A
cc: 650
MOT Expiry Date: None

Built in Cleckheaton, Yorkshire, Panther's had an enviable reputation for their sturdiness and longevity. Their long stroke single cylinder engine made them ideal for use with a sidecar and has resulted in tales of "stump pulling" torque and firing intervals measured in lampposts passed passing into motorcycling folklore..
The Panther Model 120 entered the catalogue in 1959. The new model shared the cycle parts of its smaller sibling, the "de luxe" Panther Model 100 but was fitted with an engine that displaced 645cc; an increase of 51cc's in comparison to the "smaller" model, achieved by increasing both the bore and stroke from 87 x 100mm to 88 x 106mm, but retained the "twin port" head. The frame continued to use the engine as a stressed member and was equipped with a pivoted fork rear suspension system and telescopic forks together with full width alloy hubs. A Burman four speed gearbox transmitted the engines considerable torque output to the rear wheel and a Lucas mag-dyno provided the sparks and charge. Although the sidecar market was in decline Panther production continued, on an increasingly limited scale, until 1968.
The original example offered was purchased by the vendor three years ago and has subsequently been used to attend rallies and to "take the dog out" in the single seat sidecar fitted. During the vendors ownership the engine has had a new standard liner and piston fitted and is described as being in good condition, starting easily and running well. The transmission and electrical system are described in the same way and the machine retains its original finish in serviceable condition. It is offered with a Swansea V5C.
