Designed by Lawrie Bond of Berkeley and F3 500cc racing fame but built by Sharp's Commercials of Preston (Lancashire), the three-wheeled Bond Minicar was introduced in January 1949. Conceived to meet the post WW2 need for low-cost transport, its doorless stressed-skin aluminium body offered bench seat accommodation for two / three people. Powered by an air-cooled 122cc (later 197cc) Villiers engine mounted atop its chain-driven front wheel, it utilised a three-speed direct-change gearbox, trailing-link front forks, rigid mounted rear wheels and rear wheel brakes. Fitted with a 2.5 gallon petrol tank, 6-volt electrics and fully interchangeable 16-inch x 4-inch 'low pressure' tyres, it was reputedly capable of 30mph and nigh on 90mpg. Available in basic or Deluxe guises (the latter differentiated by its glass windscreen and marked gear quadrant on the dashboard etc) some 1,973 are thought to have been made before the Model B arrived in July 1951.
Stripped to bare aluminium and partially disassembled at some time, this particular example is now in need of extensive restoration. Reportedly an unknown quantity as far as its engine, transmission and electrical equipment are concerned, it is further said to be missing a number of components including the interior trim etc. A comparatively straightforward project, it is offered for sale without documentation.
