Porsche introduced its 356-based Spyder at the 1953 Paris Motorshow. With the few built now fetching anything up to $3.7million each, the model has inspired numerous imitations and it was Hampshire firm Martin & Walker that hand-built this particular 550 Evocation in 1988. Based on a purpose-designed tubular spaceframe and clothed in Silver-coloured GRP bodywork, its Porsche Type 4 (914) running gear was reportedly either new or refurbished at the time of the car's manufacture.
The flat-four engine has been enlarged to 2400cc and is said to produce 155bhp thanks to: twin downdraught Webers, lightened flywheel, gas-flowed heads, high performance camshaft, forged pistons, cooling system comprising twin oil coolers and a horizontally mounted fan, and a stainless steel exhaust system. The unit is coupled to a Porsche five-speed gearbox. The car's detailing extends to period style Porsche wheels, body catches, instrument gauges and Red leather seats. Registered as a Porsche (declared manufactured 1971), the two-seater is eligible for historic class (free) road tax and sports both a tonneau and full soft-top. Benefiting from recent suspension, steering and brake upgrades, the Spyder is said to be in "excellent running order". With an all up weight of just 670kgs, this attractive-looking 550 Evocation offers 230bhp/tonne for less than 100th of the cost of an original example.
