The Land Rover Winter Water Wolf is a rare breed, with some 686 units believed to have been produced. Based upon the Wolf series of Land Rover, the Water Wolf iteration was designed to conquer deep water crossings and harsh cold environments, meant to withstand temperatures as low as minus 46 degrees Celsius (-50.8 degrees Fahrenheit), and make its way through 1.5 meters (4.9 feet) of deep water. it had one job to do: make the trip from the shoreline to a landing craft at sea, and back. it stands out as a specialized variant within the Land Rover line-up. The REMUS upgrade included extra roll-over protection, added vibration acoustic matting, wax injection to chassis/bulkhead and underseal to the chassis. Despite its resemblance to the Defender, the Wolf underwent substantial upgrades prioritizing durability and reliability over creature comforts, making it a rugged choice for demanding environments. Originally introduced in 1998, the Land Rover Wolf series was based on the Defender platform and served the British Armed Forces. The general Wolf platform boasted a reinforced chassis, could include a lightweight fibreglass roof, robust axles, and side-mounted spare wheels. Under the hood, a specialized version of the Land Rover 300Tdi engine ensured reliable performance in challenging conditions. While thousands of Land Rover Wolf models were manufactured, a significant number have transitioned into civilian ownership after serving their military duties. The Winter Water Wolf variant has to be the pinnacle of the Wolf series and its capabilities.
This Land Rover 90 ‘Winter Water Wolf’ was built on 8th June 1999, and has covered some 60,000 miles in its Nato Green paintwork with a Black vinyl interior and Grey rear bench seats, making it a practical 6-seater. There are thought to have been just some 686 examples built in total.
A generally well-preserved example of the extremely rare ex-military 4x4, it’s offered for sale by its first civilian owner and reported to be in original condition. First registered for military use in June 1999, this example was then registered with the DVLA in April 2021 to the current owner’s company, and later transferred to his own name in October 2021. Under the bonnet, a 2.5-litre 300Tdi engine delivers power to all four wheels via a five-speed manual transmission. The odometer shows 95,352km (59,248 miles) from new. This example is offered with an MOT until 11th September 2024.
Through the REMUS project the MoD upgraded its fleet of Wolf Land Rovers with a front roll-over protection system, rear retracting seat belts, Wright off-road front and rear anti-vibration acoustic matting, Dinitrol wax injection of chassis/bulkhead, chassis underseal, as well as the improved and desirable R380 gearbox.
The Winter Water Wolf additionally features a strengthened chassis, a lightweight fibreglass roof, stronger rear axle, side-mounted spare wheel, a special (simpler) version of the dependable 300Tdi engine, heavy-duty suspension, fully waterproof switchgear, infrared internal insulation, a rear Webasto oil heater, a Webasto engine oil heater, covert internal lighting, a kill switch, a wading raised air intake and fuel breather system, and bonnet-mounted tools. These upgrades enabled the vehicle to operate at temperatures down to -50C and to wade up to mid-windscreen height. There is also an exit hatch on the roof for fast exit should the vehicle become submerged, although this was more usually used by the co-driver as a lookout hatch when the vehicle was wading in deep water.
It rides on a set of 16-inch body-coloured steel wheels, which are fitted with recent Goodyear G90 tyres, including the new spare tyre. Equipment includes headlamp protection grilles, a roof rack, a front bumper-mounted pick head, a steering guard, a front wing snow vent, basic heater and ventilation controls, a passenger map light, front and rear demister, a high and low range gearbox, power steering, and folding rear bench seats.
Recent maintenance includes: February 2021 - A service by L. Jackson; March 2022 - JD Motors carried out an interim service; March 2023 - A new exhaust centre box and a replacement water pump installed; October 2023 - The Wolf’s most recent service was carried out at around 94,128km (58,488 miles). Notes from this service included slight play in an arm ball joint; March 2024 - The Car Works in Hertfordshire replaced the front brake pads, the handbrake cable and shoes.
This Land Rover 90 ‘Winter Water Wolf’ is a solid and reportedly highly original example of the extremely rare ex-military 4x4, offered for sale by its first and only civilian owner to date since leaving military ownership. An eminently capable companion for weekend adventures across any form of terrain and even daily driving. The Wolf is offered with the V5C Registration Document, a Date in Service Certificate, a freedom of information request from the MoD, a couple of MOT certificates, the Wolf handbook, a spare snorkel top cyclone, a cover plate for when the snorkel/raised air intake is removed, and some maintenance invoices.
