Unveiled in 1935, in response to Ford’s Model Y, the Morris Eight was better equipped than most of its competitors. Indeed, the well-regarded newcomer boasted electric wipers, synchromesh on its upper two gearbox ratios and effective Lockheed hydraulic brakes. The range included both Two-Seater and Four-Seater Tourers and was powered by a Morris UB series 918cc four-cylinder side-valve engine with three-bearing crankshaft and single SU carburettor with maximum power of 23.5bhp (17.5kW). Unveiled in September 1937, the Series II featured mainly cosmetic updates over the earlier model and some 59,000 units were produced before it was replaced by the Series E after twelve months. The success of the Eight range allowed Morris to regain its title as Britain’s largest car manufacturer.
First registered in London on May 2nd 1938 (or so its ‘EXX 480’ number plate would imply), this attractive pre-war Morris 8 has formed part of several private collections in recent years. Self-evidently the subject of much past restoration work, the accompanying history file includes photos of the car with its body removed. Repainted and retrimmed, the Tourer is further understood to have benefited from a refurbished starter motor and brake system overhaul with new wheel cylinders etc. Paperwork on file encompasses a green logbook, owner’s manual and sundry bills. Rating the bodywork, paintwork, engine, gearbox and interior trim as ‘excellent overall’, the seller adds that ‘EXX 480’ not only ‘runs sweetly’ but ‘drives well and is ready for use’.
