Norton was founded by James Lansdowne Norton in Birmingham in 1898 and began building motorcycles with French and Swiss engines in 1902. In 1907 a Norton with a Peugeot engine won the first Isle of Man TT race starting a long tradition of sporting excellence. The Commando model launched in 1967 as a 750cc carried on this theme culminating in Peter Williams's victory in the 1973 Formula 750 TT.
This race prepared Commando is based on a 1971 Street Scrambler that was manufactured on 24 of June 1971 and dispatched to the USA soon after, the 750cc Combat motor was manufactured in June 1972. Put together and raced in the USA and Canada it now features Super Blend bearings, lightened and polished crank, high compression pistons, Combat 2S cam, high flow valves, cleaned up ports and rockers, double breather cases and an upswept high level exhaust system. Chassis wise it has Koni performance rear shocks, 18" Akront alloy rims, alloy racing fuel tank and racing seat. There is a dating letter from the Norton owners club and a NOVA number if you want to get it road registered. Not run for a few years it will need recommissioning before use but could make a very useful classic race bike or an exciting cafe racer for the road.
