1947 Bentley MkVI

Estimated at £24,000 - £28,000

Lot details

Registration No: JGX 926
Chassis No: B30BH
MOT: Exempt

  • Presented in its original combination of Pearl Grey Metallic with contrasting Blue hide upholstery
  • Subject to nearly £4,000 in expenditure with Harvey Walsh Ltd since 2016
  • Believed, but not warranted, to have covered just 66,162 miles from new

Introduced in 1946, Bentley's MkVI was the first vehicle ever offered by the company with factory-designed coachwork, and the first to be assembled in Rolls-Royce's Crewe factory rather than the old Derby premises. Aimed at the emerging 'owner-driver' luxury car market, the newcomer was closely based on the 1939 MkV (of which only fifteen were produced). Built around a massive cruciform-braced chassis with independent front suspension and a leaf-sprung 'live' rear axle, it was fitted with a freshly developed 4257cc OISE (overhead inlet side exhaust valve) straight-six engine mated to a four-speed manual gearbox. Capable of over 100mph when clad in the factory's understated 'standard steel saloon' coachwork, the MkVI quickly developed a reputation for being a refined yet responsive drive.

Delivered to Jack Olding & Co Ltd of London, W1, in September 1947 for the personal use of Jack Olding Esq of Highfield, Stanmore Hill, Middlesex, 'JGX 926' was finished in Pearl Grey Metallic with contrasting Blue hide. Two years later the car was sold to owners in Perth and Camberley before being retailed through Jack Barclay Ltd in August 1951 to Messrs John I Jacobs of St Helen’s Place London, EC3. The recorded mileage in 1961 is understood to have been 35,200, while some seventeen years later the Bentley was registered to Albert John Jordan of 165 Rayleigh Rd, Hutton. Bert Jordan was a well regarded repairer who handled Rolls-Royce and other luxury vehicles. In April 1983, the car changed hands once more. Subject to annual MOT testing and much improvement work at the hands of Harvey Walsh Ltd of Kelvedon over the next eighteen years, the MKVI's odometer had increased by a mere 292 miles when it was next MOT tested during December 2016.

In 2016, ‘JGX 926’ changed hands once more through Harvey Walsh Ltd, with the car receiving significant work to the engine and chassis before being sold to its current keeper later that year. Since 2016, the car has seen nearly £4,000 in expenditure with Harvey Walsh Ltd, including the trafficators being renewed, fuel pumps overhauled and wings refinished in 2018, replacement tyres, replacement drive belt and general maintenance in 2019 and a fuel system overhaul in 2020.

Now showing just 66,162 miles, believed to be genuine, ‘JGX 926’ is still presented in its original combination of Pearl Grey Metallic with contrasting Blue hide, and is believed to retain its original interior. The accompanying history file contains details of its initial build, ownership changes and numerous old MOTs / invoices. Also included are rare leather boot straps, a full set of tools and more. The vendor rates the condition of the bodywork, engine, electrical equipment, paintwork, transmission and interior trim all as ‘Good’.
