On the 2nd of April in 1964, known as Gudmund's day in Sweden, the Saab board initiated Project Gudmund after years of meticulous planning. The goal was to create a new, larger automobile model that would expand the manufacturer's presence beyond the realm of the smaller Saab 96. The fruit of their labour was unveiled as the Saab 99, designed by the talented Sixten Sason, in Stockholm on November 22, 1967. The production of the Saab 99 extended beyond Saab's Trollhättan Assembly. Starting in 1969, certain variations of the 99 were also manufactured by Valmet Automotive in Uusikaupunki, Finland. Notably, during the last five years of this production span from 1979 to 1984, the Saab 99 shared production space with the Finnish-built version of the Talbot Horizon. Both models boasted a similar high-quality velour upholstery. While Saab's engineers held a preference for their existing two-stroke engine, the decision was made to adopt a four-stroke engine. This led to the selection of a 1.7 L (later upgraded to 1.85 L) engine sourced from Triumph. This particular engine was the same Triumph Slant-4 engine utilized in the Triumph Dolomite, though the Saab variant featured a custom Zenith-Stromberg CD carburettor. Some Saab 99s were equipped with a Triumph Stag V8, but this V8 configuration was eventually phased out in favour of a turbocharged unit, which later powered the 99 Turbo.
This 1976 Saab 99 GL Super Automatic is a classic car characterized by its unique features and history, having had a single owner since it was first registered. It is a rare right-hand drive 5-door GL version, which sets it apart from the standard models of its time. The "GL" in its name stands for "Grand Luxe," indicating its focus on luxury and comfort. Fitted with an automatic transmission, it offered a convenient and effortless driving experience during its era. Remarkably, this Saab 99 remains in its original condition, with all its components and features intact. It has travelled a total of 79,640 miles which are believed genuine, indicating its limited usage over the years. This classic Saab has been stored in the vendor's garage for an extended period, protecting it from environmental wear and tear. However, due to its prolonged storage, it requires recommissioning to bring it back to roadworthy condition. In summary, this 1976 Saab 99 GL Super Automatic is an enthusiast’s dream, with its one-owner history, rare right-hand drive 5-door GL configuration, and relatively low mileage. While it remains in its original condition with low mileage, it does require recommissioning due to its extended period of garage storage.
