Chassis No: SRH13375

  • First registered as 'UBD 2' on June 12th 1972
  • Believed but not warranted to have covered some 91,000 miles from new
  • Acquired by its previous keeper in 1994 and subsequently treated to a lower bodywork restoration
  • Will be driven to the sale and offered with handbook, sundry bills and old MOTs etc

Launched in 1965, the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow was a bold departure for the Crewe company. Their first monocoque design, it also benefited from olio-pneumatic rear suspension, power disc brakes and GM's silken 400 series automatic gearbox (though, the latter was not adopted until 1968). Such 'new technology' did not encroach on the luxurious interior with its sumptuous leather hides, rich wood veneers and deep lambswool carpets. Performance from the smooth 6230cc V8 engine (upgraded to 6750cc in 1970) was assured, the car wafting forward on a seemingly unstoppable wave of torque. Still immensely cosseting to drive, Shadows offer a genuinely different ownership experience to their mass made peers.

Acquired by its previous keeper in 1994, ‘MBD 188K’ is understood to have been treated to a high quality lower bodywork restoration a decade or so later. Believed but not warranted to have covered 91,000 miles from new, the Rolls-Royce was regularly maintained and MOT tested up until 2019. Laid-up thereafter due to Covid-19, the Silver Shadow is described by the vendor thus: “The bodywork is seemingly straight and sound albeit with some local bubbles beginning to materialise. The paintwork is faded all over and rubbed through in places. I rather like the patina but someone else might want to commission a re-spray. The chrome is very good. The interior woodwork needs doing and the carpets are tired. The car sits level, very square. It is solid and drives really nicely, running on all eight. The automatic gearbox is good and the brakes are getting better after 40 miles of enthusiastic driving. Fluid levels are correct and the coolant green. All four electric windows currently work! Overall, the electrics seem pretty good including the non-period stereo. No obvious clonks or rattles. I believe that it is an honest, straight old car with nothing hidden. As such, it represents a perfect entry level to the world of floating armchair motoring! I’ll be driving it to Duxford”.
