Created by Peel Engineering Limited on the Isle of Man, the P50 was designed and built by Cyril Cannell and Henry Kissack, and launched at the 1962 Earls Court Motorcycle Show. Built as a three-wheeler and with a 49cc engine, the Peel was advertised as being able to carry “one adult and a shopping bag” while being “almost cheaper than walking.”
The iconic vehicle formed part of a now legendary feature during an old episode of Top Gear, when, in spite of the car’s miniscule size, a Peel P50 was famously driven through the headquarters of the BBC by the 6’5” tall former host Jeremy Clarkson, showcasing the surprisingly adequate interior room. With less than 50 examples of the original P50 manufactured, survivors are extremely rare. This is where the Bamby recreations come in. Unlike other modern recreations that stray from the original plan and sometimes feature electric power, Bamby examples are very close to the original design, with just a few improvements to make the car more usable and to pass modern regulations.
Following high demand for the iconic P50, it was later revived in 2010, where it was featured in the 2010 Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s smallest production car. Supplied new by Bamby Cars in 2018, the P50 in question was constructed by an enthusiast, being examined and passing an SVA/IVA test being issued a certificate in 2018. Subsequently road registered with the DVLA, the ‘GX20 CWN’ is road-legal for use in the United Kingdom (excluding motorways). Finished in Sky Blue with Grey wheels, the Peel is undoubtedly going to draw crowds wherever it goes!
Powered by a more modern 50cc unit, mated to a centrifugal clutch and a four-speed gearbox, the Bamby examples are upgraded from the original with disc brakes, providing much more confidence for the driver in modern traffic. Other upgrades to the drivetrain in this reproduction are a rack-and-pinion steering system and a stainless-steel exhaust. Since completion and registration, the Peel was purchased by the vendor, entering his large private collection, with the Peel living in the vendor’s house alongside a 1990s Formula 1 car! Seeing minimal use with a mere 134 miles shown on the odometer, this is effectively, a freshly-built vehicle.
Accompanied by a V5C document, documentation relating to the registration and a certificate of newness from Bamby Cars, ‘GX20 CWN’ is temptingly offered with no reserve. The P50 is surely not one to miss for the private collector, and would make a fabulous talking point and incredibly fun car!
