For many the definitive Jaguar sports saloon, the MkII was introduced in October 1959. A peerless blend of elegance and muscularity, its sleek lines clothed an evolution of the Coventry marque's first monocoque. Powered by derivatives of the same XK DOHC straight-six engine that had swept Jaguar to five Le Mans victories, the MkII was quick to dominate contemporary saloon car racing. Equipped with coil-and-wishbone independent front suspension, a leaf-sprung Salisbury rear axle and four-wheel disc brakes, the range-topping 3.8 boasted nearly seven times the horsepower of a Mini 850 and a 126mph top speed!

Initially finished in Opalescent Maroon with Biscuit leather upholstery and an automatic gearbox, this particular example was manufactured on April 29th 1964 and supplied new via Henlys of London to Resprays (Coachbuilders) Ltd. Entering the current ownership in April 2012, ‘XEL 869B’ was entrusted to renowned MkII specialist Vicarage not long after for the fitment of a five-speed manual gearbox, power steering, uprated brakes, new brake / fuel lines and thicker anti-roll bars etc. The suspension was fettled too with the total bill amounting to some £12,000. Further enhancing its ‘driver’s car’ credentials, the four-seater was despatched to Jaguar engine specialist Sigma Engineering during May 2013 where its cylinder head was fully ported to ‘fast road’ specification and converted for unleaded fuel. In all some £13,776.97 was spent on improving the powerplant. More recently, ‘XEL 869B’ has been treated to an interior re-trim.

Said to present well and only being offered for sale so as to reduce the vendor’s collection to a more manageable size, the Jaguar is accompanied by an engine workshop manual, Heritage Certificate, large collection of invoices and MOTs dating back to 1987 plus an original Jaguar Sales and Service book.
