After some five decades of rivalry both on and off the track, Ferrari acquired a fifty percent stake in Maserati during 1997 before assuming full control two years later. Notable as the first model to be launched under the Prancing Horse’s control, the 3200 GT was unveiled to the press in September 1998 by Ferrari’s then president Luca di Montezemolo, the late Sir Stirling Moss and Giogetto Giugiaro of Italdesign. The latter, whose Maserati back catalogue included the Ghibli, Bora and Merak, ensured that the newcomer did not want for visual drama (its ‘boomerang’ LED taillights being a particularly striking feature). Powered by a 3.2-litre twin-turbo V8 developing some 365bhp / 362lbft, the 2+2-seater could be had with six-speed manual or (from 1999) four-speed automatic transmission. Christened the GTA, the self-shifter was reputedly capable of 0-60mph in 5.7 seconds and 168mph. Some 4,795 3200 GT / GTAs were made in total (2689 manual / 2106 automatic) with 870 of those being UK supplied.
Attractively finished in Verde Brooklands Metallico with a Tan Leather interior, Chassis 1712 was first registered on 12th June 2000 to a Mr Morgan of Derby. Each of the Maserati’s six keepers has contributed to the stamps in its service book with the current custodian entrusting it to marque specialist Trident Cars of Essex. Recent expenditure has included, but not been limited to, a full service (with cambelts) which cost some £1,658.75 and was carried out at 82,063 miles. The car today presents well with a sumptuous interior and according to the vendor that amazing engine ‘roars just as it should’. The only downside is the exterior which is now a little tired in places after twenty-three years. However, the various imperfections should hopefully be easy enough to sort should a new owner so wish. Displaying 84,119 miles at the time of consignment and offered for sale at ‘No Reserve’, this handsome 3200 GTA represents an inexpensive entry to the world of Italian Gran Turismos!
