Triumph is one of the most iconic and revered names in the history of motorcycling. Established in Coventry in 1885, by the start of the 1900s the company had made its first motorcycle beginning a continuous run of production under various ownership until its eventual closure in 1983. In 1937 the Edward Turner designed Speed Twin was released launching a range of Triumph twins that went on to epitomize British motorcycles in the post-war years. The single carb 650 Trophy was considered to be the best all round model and proved very popular in the USA.
This matching numbers 1961 pre-unit 650 Trophy was bought by the vendor when he lived and worked in the USA and brought back home with him in the late 1980s. It was then given a full restoration, a lot of the work being carried out by Hughie Hancox with many handwritten letters between him and the vendor explaining the various jobs being undertaken. It appears to have had a good engine overhaul including a rebore, new valve guides, E1591 main bearings, a crank regrind to -0.10" with the crank rebalanced. The K2FC mag was rebuilt, new tyres fitted and paintwork refinished in original colours. An older restoration, with maybe just some of the chromework showing signs of age, it was in use with the Triumph enthusiast owner up to a couple of years ago so will need some recommissioning before use. It comes supplied with a large paperwork file including the original USA title document, a few receipts, a few old MOTs, a current V5C, a Triumph Owners Club dating letter and lots of fascinating handwritten correspondence between the vendor and Hughie Hancox documenting the restoration process.
