The Mini was actually detuned before launch in 1959. The prototype's 948cc engine made it embarrassingly rapid compared with other more expensive cars in the BMC group, and it was downgraded to 848cc and 34bhp. A collaboration between racing car builder John Cooper and the Mini’s creator Alec Issigonis, the Mini Cooper debuted in September 1961 with the ultimate 1275cc S variant arriving three years later. Famously winning the Monte Carlo Rally for the third time in 1967, that same year saw the Mini updated to MkII specification complete with redesigned radiator grille, revamped interior, larger rear windscreen and a host of other minor changes. Total MkII Cooper S production across both Austin and Morris brands amounted to just 6,300 cars.
According to its accompanying BMIHT Certificate, chassis C-A2SB/1340735-A was built to right-hand drive, home market specification on November 12th 1969 and despatched to H.A. Saunders Ltd of London two days later. Little else is known about the Mini’s early history albeit a brass plaque affixed to the floor states: ‘Restored by George Labmas 1988’. Understood to retain its original engine (the associated plate matches the Heritage Certificate), the Cooper S spent many years in Greece. Reputedly prepared for the 2011 Historic Acropolis Rally, the diminutive saloon was subsequently issued with a FIA Historic Regularity Run Car Pass. Purchased from the Alman Selectivity Classic Car Collection of Piraeus by Dr Alexandros Isaacoglou, the latter put the Mini up for sale with Classic Automobiles of London for £45,000 during May 2013. Re-registered as ‘SVR 514H’ the following year, accompanying paperwork amassed over the past decade includes invoices from: Somerford Mini JJC Race and Rally and Sanspeed. Notably presentable (especially for a competition car), the four-seater sports a map light, rollcage, trip meter, Sparco harnesses, auxiliary leather bonnet / boot straps, twin fuel tanks, quad spotlights and Minilite-style alloys. Worthy of close inspection and reputedly one of just 1,479 home market examples made, ‘SVR 514H’ is offered for sale with V5C Registration Document and history file.
