Rolls-Royce launched the Silver Cloud in April 1955, and it was the company's core model range for the next 11 years. For the final iteration, the Silver Cloud III, the exterior dimensions were subtly altered, the interior remodelled and the weight reduced by some 220lbs. Engine improvements included replacing the 1.75-inch SU carburettors with 2.0-inch ones and raising the compression ratio to 9:1. The resulting extra performance allowed the 0-60mph dash to be completed in just 10.1 seconds and a mean top speed of 114.3mph. The obvious visual change was the adoption of four headlamps. Less noticeable were the slightly increased slope of the bonnet and the shorter (by 1.5 inches) radiator grille.
Chassis SAZ.37 was supplied new through Rolls-Royce agent P. J. Evans of Birmingham and was delivered on the 29th October 1962 to the first owner, a Mr E. F. Cash Esq of 147 Moor Green Lane, Birmingham, who is understood to have been an embroidery shop owner. Specified from the factory in Sand over Sable paintwork with a Beige hide interior upholstery with Fawn headcloth and Cumberland stone carpet, this is pleasingly still the colour scheme in which the Cloud is presented today. The Cloud was further optioned with electric windows, 620T radio, and Avon tubeless tyres when new. Acquired by the vendor from a Rolls-Royce and Bentley specialist in 2016 after being seen during his search for a Cloud III, this specific model was desired by the vendor due to memories of being taken to watch Derby County Football Club in a Cloud III by his father’s friend and business partner, Sam Longson, while Mr Longson was in his role as Derby Country Chairman!
Purchased for the value of £69,000, the vendor has covered over 10,000 trouble-free miles in his nine-year ownership, with the Cloud now displaying c.76,500 credible miles on the odometer. Well-maintained during the vendor's ownership by a classic car specialist, the Rolls-Royce has been lavished with some £12,750 worth of expenditure, with maintenance including servicing; power steering fettling and underside attention in 2022; wheel refurbishment in 2021; and renewed starting equipment, brake refresh and speedometer overhaul in 2018. Supplied with a history file that includes the RREC chassis records, invoices from the vendor's ownership, a collection of MOT certificates and a current V5C document showing four former keepers and is accompanied by a touring spares package. Entered into the RREC Concours for cars covering over 3,000 miles per year while in the custodianship of the vendor, chassis SAZ.37 came within two marks of winning, with the vendor admitting ‘school-boy errors’ accounted to the falling short such as a headlight bulb failure on route.
A notably nicely presented example in its original colour combination, this Cloud is worthy of close inspection!
