The first Royal Enfield motorcycle was built in 1901 by the Enfield Cycle Company of Redditch having previously manufactured bicycles, lawnmowers and stationary engines. Under various ownership, the name has continued through to the present day making it one of the longest-lasting names in the two-wheeled world. In 1953 Royal Enfield introduced the short lived 250cc Model S to compete in the learner legal capacity, this quarter-litre roadster was similar to its larger siblings featuring a cast-iron top-end, oil tank integral with the alloy crankcase, and a separate gearbox all hCoused in a rigid frame with telescopic forks up front. Only in production for one year between November 1953 and November 1954 it is one of the harder Royal Enfields to find today.
This 1954 example was restored in 2010, originally all Black it was brightened up with the tank and mudguards being re-finished in Red. The bike is fitted with a later Clipper type gearbox and a slightly upswept silencer. Last run about 18 months ago, it will need some recommissioning before use and comes with a current V5C, some instruction manuals, dating certificates from the Royal Enfield Club and a few spare parts.
PLEASE NOTE :- It has just been noticed that the Engine and Frame numbers of 4067 on the V5C are not correct and should read 4064, as stamped on the bike. This appears to have stemmed from a typo on the dating letter from the Royal Enfield Owners Club.
