With ‘RS’ initials taken from the German RennSport (racing sport), the RS4, the high-performance version of Audi's A4 Avant, combined blistering performance from its 2.7 litre V6 from Cosworth Technology, with everyday usability, and benefitted from being equipped with Audi's Torsen-based quattro four-wheel drive system as standard. Unlike its predecessor, which was developed together with Porsche, at this model’s heart was power developed together with the British specialist Cosworth Technology, owned by Audi at the time. Created as an alternative within the market dominated by the BMW M3, the RS4 Avant was the legit successor for the RS2 that had thrilled customers in the early '90s. Said to offer 0-100kmh (62.1 mph) in 4.9 seconds, the top speed was electronically limited to 155mph (250kmh) through a six-speed manual gearbox. While the overall shape of the car was similar to the regular A4 Avant, the RS4 version’s wheelarches were wider to accommodate fat and grippy tyres. Inside, the leather-wrapped interior restrained its driver and side passenger in comfort, with Recaro high-bolstered sports seats. The Avant platform’s stiffened and lowered suspension allowed the RS4 Avant to run faster than any of its stablemates.
Supplied new by the Berlin Audi main agent Autohaus Möbus, Berlin, Germany, as a UK specification car, the first owner was a lady from Chelsea, London. Subsequently, she sold the RS4 to Audi Whetstone in North London, from whom our current vendor, a now-retired doctor, purchased the car. As a medical professional, he loved the practicality and comfort of the vehicle on his London commute and never raced, rallied or modified it. Now retired, he would like to see the RS4 enjoyed by a new custodian wishing to enjoy this class-leading performance estate with its Cosworth Technology engine. We are informed the RS4 drives well, with no MOT advisories and is complete with a stamped service book with mostly Audi garage and some independent specialist entries. Last serviced in June 2024 at 93,454 miles by specialists VWAuditec, it is offered with the service record, 2 keys plus the key and tag from the factory. A common issue of the gauge binnacle’s LED ‘scrolling info screen’ display pixelating, is easily rectified these days. Bodywork-wise there are few minor blemishes from being enjoyed over two decades, nothing a little love wouldn’t rectify on such a pedigree modern classic. Offered with its V5C, it is an Audi, that is a Cosworth, that is an estate and that is a performance car.
