The original mid-engined two-seater MR2 (it stood for Midship Runabout Two-Seater) was an unexpected offering from Toyota - a manufacturer previously noted for its practical but very conventional family cars. It certainly caused quite a stir when it burst onto the market in 1984 - from its 'origami' styling to its Lotus-designed and honed suspension, the newcomer was a welcome breath of fresh air. Toyota’s third-generation MR2 was launched in Japan a few days before the 1999 Tokyo Motor Show and in the same month that Toyota’s cumulative passenger car production reached 100 million units. Incredibly, the new model weighed significantly less than the first-generation car (from 960kg) whilst also offering a substantial specification level, a feat partly achieved by deleting the rear boot and therefore the fifth bulkhead.
Manufactured new in 2000, the MR2 offered was supplied new to the United Kingdom, being registered new on the 8th of July that year. Finished in striking Red Metallic paintwork with Black leather interior upholstery with a Black hood, ‘W656 NDX’ is powered by Toyota’s excellent 1ZZ-FED 16-valve DOHC, 138bhp, 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine allied to the five-speed manual transmission. Specified from new with electric power windows and mirrors, the Toyota has covered just 68,000 miles from new, and has had just three former keepers. Recently benefitting from a fresh battery and four new tyres, the MR2 is supplied with a no advisory MOT until May 2024 and a current V5C document.
