Introduced in October 1983, the Jaguar XJ-S 3.6 was intended to be a sharper, more sporting foil to the range's established, soporific 5.3-litre V12 model. To emphasise the difference, it was fitted with a five-speed manual Getrag gearbox as standard, although a four-speed automatic (ZF 4HP22) was offered from 1987 onwards. With some 225bhp and 240lbft of torque on tap courtesy of its 3590cc DOHC 24 valve straight-six, the claimed 140mph top speed and 0-60mph time of 7.4 seconds were a near match for the V12. Yet when such performance was not called upon, it could reputedly return thirty miles per gallon, a feat beyond the V12's capabilities. A revised, more positive feel to the power steering improved the handling still further.
Manufactured in 1991, the XJ-S on offer was first registered in the United Kingdom on the 12th of September that year and was supplied new to its first owner via TWR Jaguar of Coventry. Fitted with the aforementioned 3590cc straight-six engine allied to the four-speed ZF automatic transmission, the Jaguar is finished in Tuscany Bronze with Barley leather interior upholstery. Displaying seven former keepers on HPI and a recorded mileage of c.117,200 miles at the time of consignment, ‘J170 RAC’ is understood to have spent a period of time in Switzerland, thought to be from the mid-1990s and mid-2010s before being repatriated to the United Kingdom.
Fitted with cruise control, the Jaguar is riding on matching Pirelli P600s all-round and displays some of its original registration number etched glass. Benefitting from some paintwork improvement and a replacement steering rack in 2021, and a new battery in 2022, ‘J170 RAC’ is offered with a history file that includes the original bookpack which contains manuals including the owner’s handbook and stamped service book displaying fourteen entries (many from Jaguar's main agents and specialists), with the most recent service completed around 5,000 miles ago with new front shock absorbers and bushes also fitted. The accompanying documents file also contains a collection of invoices, some previous MOT certificates, a current V5C document, an MOT certificate until April 2023, and two sets of keys.
