'XRR' represents an excellent opportunity to acquire a 'racing' BMW Saloon with impeccable provenance
Offered here is the 1980 BMW County Championship race series winner that was set-up in road-going specification c.1980/1981 by Sytner BMW (Sytner perhaps adding the Alpina livery). For 1979 and 1980, BMW concessionaires set up a 2-year race programme for its BMW 323i, antecedent of the M3. 'XRR' was one of the twelve BMW County Championship cars prepared by Tom Walkinshaw Racing (TWR), that competed in both 1979 (wearing a Metallic Red livery and successfully representing Berkshire) and 1980 (repainted Alpine White), winning the 1980 championship with Martin Brundle and Patrick Neve, as the ‘Norfolk' entry. They competed in the series alongside drivers such as Derek Bell, Nigel Mansell and even Barry Sheene.
Post-series and subsequently reconfigured for the road, the car was registered in 1982, with the current indicated mileage of 34,984 miles thought to be correct and the V5C recording two former keepers. The present owner acquired the car for normal road use in 1984. Glass fibre panels from its racing years are present with the car and still display the names of the drivers and their race number ‘4’. A spare differential unit is also included. Although in need of recommissioning, the engine is free. A substantial history file includes a quantity of photographs, race series literature, an owner's handbook, receipts and invoices. Significant in sporting BMW Saloon history, 'XRR' represents an excellent opportunity to acquire a 'racing' BMW Saloon with impeccable provenance.
