The Lambretta TV175 series 3 was launched in March 1962 and it was the first scooter supplied with an internal disc brake. It was a remarkable change from the previous TV175 Series 2 with new sleek slim styling. The front shock absorbers were enhanced with extra dampers as in the previous TV Series 2 models. The TV Series 3 also had larger silent blocks than the previous engines and it had a very good reputation as a smooth and well-balanced scooter with great handling attributes. The larger engined TV200 quickly followed the TV175 slim style in early 1963 at the specific request of the British importer Lambretta Concessionaires who wanted an even more powerful model than the TV175 to satisfy their customer base. Genuine TV200 Lambrettas were instantly recognised as the GT200 to differentiate them from the TV175 models.
Registered new on the 19th May 1965 in Greater London, this example of a genuine registered GT200 has only one previous owner; the vendor purchased the scooter from Cambridge Lambretta in 2020, they’d been asked to sell it by the widow of the only previous owner. They had been told that the owner was a BBC producer (who worked on TV’s 'Doctor Who') and that he had had an accident on the scooter in 1967 and that the front mudguard and engine had been replaced at that time. The front mudguard is therefore a steel replacement and the engine casing is a genuine Concessionaires Innocenti 200cc replacement casing as depicted by the central star stamp on the top of the casing.
The scooter has superb patina. The cables appear to have never been dismantled and the scooter appears to be original everywhere except for a replacement exhaust and speedo cable. The original purple panel GT200 paint is visible under the over-painting and the GT200 retains the original Giuliari seat with original cover, disc brake and speedometer. All keys are present, including the original ignition key for the original ignition switch. Still on original 6v points, the vendor assures us he has not changed anything in his ownership except the clutch plates, exhaust and speedo cable. The scooter is running superbly as our consultant was able to see at time of consignment.
An impressive history file preserves the provenance of the scooter, particularly the mention as a GT200 on the V5C. There is a tax disc from 1973 where we also have an MOT issued in that year. There is an insurance book supplied by the original dealers, White and Martin, from 1970. In recent years this scooter has won multiple trophies including: Best Original Lambretta, Southport 2021, and Best Ridden Lambretta Southport 2021, Best Original Lambretta Isle of Wight 2021 and Best Original Lambretta, Mersey Island 2019. London registered GTs are at the top of the list in collectors’ circles and we expect significant interest in this scooter.
