The Lambretta TV175 Series 3 was launched in March 1962 and it was the first scooter supplied with an internal disc brake. It was a remarkable change from the previous TV175 Series 2 with new sleek slim styling. The front shock absorbers were enhanced with extra dampers as in the previous TV Series 2 models. The TV Series 3 also had larger silent blocks than the previous engines and it had a very good reputation as a smooth and well-balanced scooter with great handling attributes. The larger engined TV200 quickly followed the TV175 slim style in early 1963 at the specific request of the British importer Lambretta Concessionaires who wanted an even more powerful model than the TV175 to satisfy their customer base. Genuine TV200 Lambrettas were instantly recognised as the GT200 to differentiate them from the TV175 models.
This very early example of a genuine GT200 was produced in the first 3 months of TV200 production in July 1963 but not registered until 13th December of that year, after it had made its long way up to the north of England. Yup Ping Bruno Lee was one of 3 brothers who emigrated to the UK from Hong Kong and worked in various restaurants in the north of England (He was later famed for opening the first Chinese restaurant in Carlisle). Quite why he bought a top of the range TV200 brand new is unknown but he needed to get around the various towns and obviously had good taste. One can imagine the sight of a Chinese restaurant owner racing around the lanes and towns of the high north of England in the early 1960s at the time of the first Mods. As recited by the vendor his son – “The scooter was used as daily transport until 1979 when it was put away out of sight 43 years ago just in time to escape the clutches of the second coming of the Mods…until now.”
The scooter has never been dismantled and is original everywhere including all cables, engine and loom. The original purple panel GT200 paint is visible under the over-painting, and she retains the original and superb Pegasus seat. The fiberglass front mudguard is in very good shape. Of course, everything is original and where it should be. Despite a really thorough examination the only replaced part seems to be a new side panel clip holder on one side. There is obvious damage to the headset, and it is unknown how this happened. She rolls on her wheels and the brakes work but the piston is seized.
The documents that come with the scooter are also enthralling and complete the history. Apart from an original dealer tag from T.P. Bell listing some consumables purchased on the rear. There is the original engine guarantee addressed to Mr Lee in December 1963 signed by Peter Agg of Lambretta Concessionaires himself. There is the membership welcome letter from BLOA the British Lambretta Owners Association with a very rare original BLOA waterslide and also some MOTs and tax discs. Despite the overpainting a GT200 in such untouched condition is an incredible opportunity for a serious purchaser.
