During World War II Ferdinando Innocenti ran a steel tubing factory in the Lambrate district of Milan in northern Italy, producing components for the Italian Air Force and construction. After the war, Innocenti needed to find a new product in order for his business to survive. Production of Lambretta scooters began in 1947, the year after Piaggio started production of its Vespa models.
The Lambretta LD Mk1 was first introduced in 1951 as a 125cc model as a successor to the LC. It had covered panels over a tubular frame and had the addition of a torsion bar. This feature remained on all Lambrettas until 1958. The LD also had springs enclosed in the front forks. The Mk2 had a number of improvements. The rear brake was now cable controlled and the gears used a single teleflex cable. There was also a small luggage box which housed the optional speedometer. The whole ride experience was much improved and the LD was subsequently a very popular model. By the time of the Mk3 gear system now used 2 teleflex cables and there was a rear shock absorber on the rear end.
This example has been subject to a well-considered and complete overhaul to run more in line with modern traffic using modern performance components. The engine was replaced with the more reliable Mk3 engine which was in turn subject to a complete rebuild using an RT Gran Turismo 150cc reed valve kit. The cables and electric wiring loom were also completely renewed as was the entire suspension. The most noticeable change was the switch to 10 inch wheels. The list of new parts include:
She has some nice additions including blue saddle seats and blue panel rubbers. The overall improvement in handling and speed over standard LD scooters has cost the vendor a considerable amount of time and money. We were able to see the scooter running and our consultant was able to ride the scooter and it performed very well at time of consignment. The vendor uses the scooter regularly and has used it on long trips most recently to the Woolacombe National Scooter Rally.
