The Jaguar MkIV was Jaguar’s first car following World War II and was produced between 1945 and 1948. Manufactured using a 120” separate chassis featuring beam front and live rear axle suspension on semi-elliptic springs and Girling mechanical brakes, it was offered with three engine variants; four-cylinder 1½ Litre, or six-cylinder 2½ / 3½ Litres coupled to a four-speed manual gearbox. The stylish all steel coachwork was available in four-door saloon or Drophead Coupe configurations featuring the kind of luxurious interior typically associated with the Jaguar. In addition, it featured distinguishing chrome headlamps and a prominent chrome radiator grill. Very few of these magnificent Jaguars were built for the right-hand markets as steel was being rationed for goods for export.
Supplied new to the United Kingdom and registered new on the 22nd of September 1947, the MkIV Saloon offered was supplied new to an Army Colonel, who reputedly later became an MP. Subsequently, under another ownership, the Jaguar was laid up before the car was purchased by the vendor some twenty-five years ago as a restoration project. The bodywork restoration started shortly after the purchase, with the vendor aiming to restore the Jaguar to a concours standard for concours events. Driven into its current dry storage location approximately twenty-one years ago, the restoration of ‘CNL 533’ then stalled and has not progressed since. The engine is reportedly free and chassis ‘413379’ is now ripe for restoration, with the restoration appeal assisted by it being accompanied to sale by a donor vehicle.
The SS Jaguar donor vehicle (chassis ‘411846’ and registration ‘HNN 709’) is believed to have started its production in 1939, before being mothballed during wartime and finally completed and road registered post-war. Acquired by the vendor some thirty years ago, the Saloon was completely stripped to a bare chassis, with the chassis refreshed and powder coated, overhauls were provided to the engine, gearbox, axles, steering, brakes, and radiator, as well as the mudguards being restored, and five new wheels supplied. Similar to ‘CNL 533’, restoration progress then stalled and the SS has remained in dry storage ever since. Offered as a pair, the vendor had in recent times thought that he would produce one restored car from the two but has now realised that he has too many projects. ‘CNN 533’ is offered with a V5C document and the SS Jaguar is offered with just the green 'new keeper' slip.
