Announced in October 1927, the Austin Sixteen Light Six slotted into the Longbridge manufacturer’s range between its existing Twelve and Twenty horsepower models. Entering production the following year, the newcomer was based around a sturdy ladder frame chassis equipped with all-round semi-elliptic leaf sprung suspension and four-wheel drum brakes. Powered by a long-stroke 2249cc six-cylinder engine allied to four-speed manual transmission, the Austin could be had with a choice of open and closed coachwork. A high quality machine but one that differed insufficiently from its lesser siblings in terms of capabilities and performance, the Sixteen was phased out after a decade.
Supplied new to New Zealand, this notably smart Burnham Saloon remained there for the next eighty-five years. The subject of much restoration work prior to its repatriation, the Austin is nicely detailed throughout with an external sun visor, rear-mounted spare wheel, full-length running boards and split bumpers. Entering the current ownership via The Real Car Company in 2019, ‘XVV 174’ (also known as ‘Bertie’) has since been treated to a full interior re-trim. Awarded 3rd-in-class at the Austin Ten Drivers’ Club’s Annual Rally in 2022 and said to be ‘wonderful to drive’, the Sixteen is described by the vendors as being in ‘very good overall’ condition.
