‘The fact is that if you want a sports car, the MX-5 is perfect. Nothing on the road will give you better value. Nothing will give you so much fun. The only reason I’m giving it five stars is because I can’t give it 14’ – Jeremy Clarkson
Some thirty-five years on from its 1989 Chicago Motor Show introduction, the Mazda MX-5 remains refreshingly true to its initial ‘Jinba Ittai’ (‘oneness of horse and rider’) design credo. Still resolutely front-engined and rear-wheel drive, the two-seater Roadster vies with the Porsche 911 for the title of world’s best-selling sportscar. The first and second generation cars are regarded as the purest incarnations of the MX-5 albeit that the latter benefit from a glass rear window, improved headlights and slightly more horsepower.
Produced in collaboration with the British fashion designer Jasper Conran, the special edition MX-5 that bore his name was limited to just 500 cars. Available in either Classic Black with Black leather (400) or Platinum Silver with Red leather (100), the newcomer was trimmed to a far higher standard than the 1.8iS model upon which it was based. As well as Connolly hides and Wilton carpets, the uprated interiors featured a host of contrasting silver accents and a numbered plaque. Powered by a 1.8 litre DOHC four-cylinder engine allied to manual transmission, the ‘Jasper Conran’ also benefited from all-round independent suspension, rack and pinion steering, disc brakes and a limited slip differential. With some 140bhp and 120lbft on tap, the two-seater was reputedly capable of 0-60mph in 7.7 seconds and 127mph.
Number 376 of the 400 Classic Black ‘Jasper Conran’ Edition cars made, ‘Y322 XHH’ was supplied new to its sole registered keeper via JCT600 Mazda of Leeds on 17th March 2001. Warranted to have covered a mere 37,000 miles, the odometer reading is substantiated by two service stamps plus eight related maintenance invoices. A one lady owner, low mileage, limited edition MX-5 offered for sale without reserve and accompanied by a V5C Registration Document, owner’s manual, service book, numerous bills and fresh MOT certificate.
