The Piaggio industrial group was devastated by the consequences of World War 2. Amongst the projects muted to rescue the company was an idea to help mobilise the Italian public with a new transport concept ‘The motor scooter’. From the launch in 1946 it was such a success that it has become a symbol of taste, fashion and style and is one of the favourite global design icons of all time, The Vespa.

By the early 1960’s Vespa Douglas in Great Britain were importing Italian built Vespas as opposed to continuing to manufacture them. The Vespa SS90 made between 1965 and 1971 is much sought after by collectors due to its extreme rarity and only just over 5000 were produced. The Vespa 90 Racer is even rarer with a total reported production of only 3512 machines. The engine is identical to the SS90 with the two-stroke 88.5 cc engine as a single-cylinder, air-cooled unit with a bore/stroke of 47/51 mm and an 8.7:1 compression ratio. It’s paired with a 4-speed gearbox, the dry weight is 77 kilograms, and the top speed is 93 km/h (58 MPH). The only visible difference on the 90 Racer is that the exhaust was black as opposed to the SS90 exhaust which was chrome. The frame was a standard Vespa 90 body with simple Vespa badging on the front. On the rear however there was an identifiable sticker ‘Racer’. The headset, forks and wheels were the same as the 125 Primavera.

This 90 Racer is a very rare find indeed. Still in her original red paint which is in very good condition she has only had minor touch ups on the floor area. Remarkably she still has the original and impossible to find ‘Racer’ sticker on the rear of the frame. The engine is completely original and exhaust is the original supplied. The scooter has only covered 917 miles from new which is verified by the service bills from 1976 when she had only covered 101 miles and subsequent MOT’s. The engine has recently had a light service with new points, condenser, spark plug, flywheel side oil seal and had the clutch plates unsiezed.

This actual scooter also featured in an exclusive article in Scootering magazine issue 100 of January 1994. A copy of which also is provided with the package. Also provided will be the original service bills, MOT’s and past registration documents. This scooter really is a time warp. This most rare and sought after Vespa model with detailed service history and originality seldom comes onto the market. We expect significant interest in it.
