The Morgan 4/4 was in production for an amazing eighty-three years (1936-2019), a fact that earned both manufacturer and model a place in the Guinness Book of Records. The Malvern Company’s first four-wheeled / four-cylindered design (hence the name), it stayed true to the same tried and tested formula for generations. Unveiled in 1993, the Morgan 4/4 1800 was faster, cleaner and more frugal than many of its predecessors. Based around a box-section ladder-frame chassis equipped with independent 'sliding pillar' front suspension, a leaf-sprung 'live' rear axle and disc / drum hydraulic brakes, the aluminium over ash construction of its bodywork contributed towards a commendably low kerb weight (circa 868kg). Embracing the marque tradition of using proprietary running gear, the newcomer was powered by a Ford-sourced 1796cc four-cylinder ‘Zetec’ engine (complete with fuel-injection and double-overhead camshafts) allied to five-speed manual transmission. Impractical yet beguiling, the 4/4 1800 sported a basic interior, minimal luggage space and potentially argumentative hood offset by a singularly involving driving experience and vivid acceleration.
This particular 4/4 ‘Runabout Sports’ is finished in the attractive combination of ‘Regal Red’ with a Black cloth interior. First registered on 9th July 2004 and supplied by Richard Thorne Morgan, this more powerful 1800 Zetec car benefits from an upgraded hood mechanism and luggage rack.
Having covered just 10,751 miles over the first 13 years of its life, the car entered into current registered ownership on 18th March 2017. Since then, the car has travelled only 700 miles, but has been well looked after and brought back to its supplying dealer regularly; subject to wax treatment to the chassis, the side screens refinished, a major service including greasing, oiling and a cambelt service in June 2017, pedal covers and a Caliber RMD radio with in-built speakers fitted, the fuel tank cleaned and more fettling. It revisited them in 2018, 2019 and 2021 - presumably having a year off due to COVID19. Standing idle rendered the fuel pump unusable, so this was replaced in October 2021 along with some attention to a small area of corrosion on the wing. New ‘Lift the Dots’ on the hood were fitted in July last year.
Included with the vehicle is a comprehensive history file. Included within is the owner’s handbook containing 13 service stamps, the most recent at 10,508 miles. As well as this, a log of the car’s history from the most recent owner, a large collection of previous MOT certificates, invoices and receipts dating back to when the car was new, the EEC Certificate of Conformity, various informational documents, radio guide and more. The current V5C document is also included which displays 1 former keeper.
